Scotland Recap August 21-22,2009 – Royal Lytham and Royal Liverpool

The last two days of our trip we headed down towards the Manchester area to play our last two rounds.

Royal Lytham and St. Annes:  we actually stayed on site in the so called dorms ( the dormy package ) which included lunch the day we played, our green fee, a several course dinner that night in the club’s dining room which was excellent and breakfast the next morning. The rooms were very nice right opposite the clubhouse, pro shop and practice putting green, the golf course was gorgeous, magnificant, fantastic – the deepest bunkers of all / and great design and detail on each of the individual holes , but  the highlight for me was John my caddie who was 84 years old. He first caddied here in 1944, had untold stories to tell, and gave all of us great insight on how to play each hole. I would often see Dru, Jonas and Mark bend their ears just to hear another one ! I liked the course so much I got up early Saturday morning just to walk it one more time before we headed off for Royal LiverPool. Enjoy the pictures below.  Interesting side note: they have the 4 score cards from Bobby Jones victory there. One card just doesn’t add up – it read 57 from what we could see for a total on one set of 9 holes, but counted as  37 in the computation of the total score; the 57 was clearly the wrong number, but the member I asked about this said he never heard about this. Rich

Royal Liverpool :  Since our Tee time was only at 2:40 pm, we stopped at Royal Birkdale for a peak since it was on our way. We actually had an invite to play there on the 23rd, but we were already scheduled to fly home that day. It looked nice from the clubhouse area, but a little too hard to come to any conclusions based on what little we saw. En route to Liverpool, we did see Penny Lane in passing ( memories of the Beatles !),  but we only just arrived in time at the club for a quick bite and then to the 1st tee we went.  Again I had a great caddie – opposite end of the age spectrum – at 28 , Jason plays on the mini tours and is working on his game to try and make it to the next level. Reminded me of Bill Jr. in terms of height ans overall size !! We all enjoyed our day at Hoylake – I think it under whelmed us a little bit, perhaps because we had just played  Royal Lytham which we adored. But there were several tough holes to be played, especially towards the close of our round.  Dru had the highlight of the day , getting home in 2 on the par 5 , 8th hole then draining a 30 footer for eagle.  We had a great day, weather was perfect, and the hospitality from the club was very warm. Enjoy the 47 photos – they start with Jonas in his white shirt putting for birdie on #5 – which is the 6th picture after the photo of my green key to my “dormy”room at Royal Lytham !!   Best. Rich
