Happy Holidays!

December 31, 2009

Hi everybody,

Just saw a really great slogan on the JH Pancreatic Cancer discussion board which I thought I’d share:

Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass; it’s about learning to dance in the rain.

We are now in Naples again thanks to the continued generosity of friends.  Given the cold temps of the past weeks around Indy, Richard finds the weather here more conducive to walking and getting his exercise, while the brilliant sunshine is tremendous for keeping his ( and our ) attitude positive .We are also  trying to take advantage of every moment of time together right now before the boys return to school in January.  It looks like Meg will get to stay with us for most of our time here.  When the kids were little, we used to call our vacations and trips together “FFO’s” and I’ll leave that to your imagination to decipher what it described back then – especially when today I’d call them Fantastic Family Outings!

Richard has had some up and down days as medications are adjusted and some foods are not well tolerated.  But overall, he has many more good days than bad and recently he seems to have done better than for the last few weeks.  We think he may have gotten dehydrated for a period of time and it takes his body longer to recover due to his cancer.

We had a lovely quiet Christmas together – travel to Ottawa was scrapped because Richard just wasn’t up to it, particularly if it involved getting stuck in DC on a layover en route to Ottawa.  Meg bought a game called Smart Ass which is somewhat like Trivial Pursuit with lots of clues to allow each person to guess the answer.  We had lots of laughs playing this game and my poor luck with dice continued – I would be waiting at the gates hoping to roll a one or two and it just didn’t happen.  No fair!

I hope no one is offended – our Christmas cards arrived late and some were sent out after Christmas.  Our approach was disorganized at best so if we missed anyone, please know that it was unintentional.  Life is just a bit crazy right now.

We wish you all good health and cheer in 2010!!!!

Great picture and the food must have been good too as your plates look empty to me. Glad to hear you are all “loving it up” in the sunshine. Last night was a winter wonderland here. There was a “blue moon” (that’s what they call a second full moon in a month) beaming thru a thin cover of clouds, snow laden tree boughs, and gentle falling snow (like the special affects you added to the web site Jane). I managed to pull off my annual New Year snow angel too…I even managed to get up without ruining it. Have you ever tried a “sand angel”?
Thank you for the beautiful Christmas card. A treasure for sure.
    Love and hugs

Glad to hear you’re enjoying the warmth and sunshine of Florida and quality time together before the boys head off. I’m on an extended FFO with my darlings and tomorrow will be another ski day with temperatures around -15C. We get a couple days off this week for Epiphany.

    Love to all,

Glad to hear that you are all enjoying the FFO in Naples. Perhaps hearing that it snowed off and on all day today and we had a windchill of minus 25C will add to your enjoyment! I know Mom is excited about joining you this week. Have a good time together. Like the boys, I am back to school (tomorrow). Boo hoo. Love to you all.

    Dear Richard and Jane,

Looks like a lot of fun with the family! We have incredible cold weather and lots of snow in Minneapolis so I hope the warm sunshine is treating you well. Current mind set here is ice fishing for walleye and crappie – – a swing of the golf club in a warm climate is off the radar screen but the pictures sure bring back fond memories of beautiful summer days..

Keep smiling, thinking of you often and all the best, Tim
